Born and raised in southern Alberta, Dr. Ben Barrus attained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta, and then studied Optometry at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, graduating with honours in 2008. He has been fortunate to gain a wide range of valuable experience in eye care, from volunteering with a medical team performing eye surgeries in Zimbabwe, providing vision care to underprivileged areas in the Tongan Islands, to working with a highly skilled team of medical professionals at the primary eye hospital in New Zealand. Returning home to Canada has given him the opportunity to put down roots in Calgary where he has been practicing for the last 9 years.
Dr. Barrus performs comprehensive eye exams and has a particular interest in pediatrics, dry eye, myopia control, binocular vision, specialty contact lens fitting, and surgical co-management. He enjoys the challenge of helping his patients solve their vision problems, and he works collaboratively with Ophthalmologists and other health professionals to provide outstanding vision care to his patients. As of 2017, Dr Barrus serves on the board of the Alberta Association of Optometrists.
In his free time, Dr. Barrus enjoys spending time with his wife Jesse and his three lovely and energetic daughters. He enjoys being outdoors, camping in the mountains with his family, and cheering on New Zealand’s rugby team the All Blacks.
DR. BEN BARRUS
Christina has been working in the optical industry since early 1997. She is a Licensed Optician with a background in highly personalized customer service. She has worked as a store manager, a Regional Manager and a Director of Professional Development in those 20+ years. As an optician, she specializes in addressing the patients’ needs through understanding their visual requirements for their lifestyle. She is a highly technical optician and takes a problem-solving approach to matching the correct lens technology and frame fit to each patient. She has an interest in fashion, being able to find just the right look to keep you feeling fresh with each new pair, but staying within both your budget and your style. She enjoys the challenge of fitting her patients with eyewear that they love and that is more than just functional for their visual needs. Her goal with each patient is for them to enjoy the experience of choosing new eyewear, and to love their improved vision.
Born and raised in Montreal, Christina speaks French fluently. Christina is a busy mother of an adult daughter and a teenage son, and in her free time she enjoys yoga, working out, camping and board games.
DR. JENN COOKE
Dr. Jenn Cooke was born in Regina, Saskatchewan but has made SouthEast Calgary home for more than 20 years. She achieved her Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia and then graduated on the Dean’s Honour List from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry. During her schooling, she was fortunate enough to travel to Moldova to provide eye care and glasses to underprivileged communities. During her final year, she completed multiple internships including a disease internship in Florida and a primary care internship working with Dr. Barrus himself.
Dr. Cooke performs comprehensive eye exams. She is always up for the challenge of trying to solve her patients’ individual vision problems and works collaboratively with other health professionals to find a solution. She feels it is important to educate her patients with the knowledge they need to understand their eye conditions.
In her free time, you can find Dr. Cooke spending time with her friends and family, baking, or going to her favourite spin/yoga class.
Josée was an English Second Language teacher for 16 years in her hometown of Quebec city. In 2011, she moved to Calgary with her family. She was ready for a career change and began working as an associate in an optical clinic. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to take the opticians course. She has now been a licensed optician for since 2016. Josée enjoys taking time to get to know her patients to better be able to serve their visual needs and is a life long learning advocate, always eager to learn and refined her opticianry skills.
Josée spends her free time with her husband, teenage children and her two cats. She enjoys cooking, going to the movies, long walks, bird watching and is an avid reader.
